Translation with AI

Translating text, documents and conversations between languages with AI.

What is it?

Machine translation turns text from one language into another. Modern systems use neural networks, and large language models can also translate while keeping the tone, style and context you ask for, such as formal for business or simple for children.

AI translation is fast and often good enough to understand a message or write a first draft. It is weaker for rare languages, slang, jokes, local expressions and specialist terms. For legal, medical, official or published material, a qualified human translator should review the result.

Which models use it?

  • Google Translate and Microsoft Translator are widely used translation services.
  • DeepL is a translation service known for neural machine translation.
  • General assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can translate and adapt tone.
  • Meta has released open translation research models covering many languages.

How to use it

  1. Say the source and target language, and the regional variety if it matters.
  2. Describe the audience and tone: formal, friendly, technical, simple.
  3. Give a short glossary for names, product terms and words that must not change.
  4. Ask it to flag phrases that are ambiguous or hard to translate.
  5. Have a fluent speaker review anything important before you publish or sign it.

Benefits

  • Instant understanding of text in many languages.
  • Fast first drafts for documents, websites and messages.
  • Can adapt tone and style, not just words.
  • Makes information accessible to more people.

Limits and risks

  • Can change meaning, especially with idioms, humour or context.
  • Quality varies by language; less common languages are usually weaker.
  • Specialist terms may be translated wrongly.
  • Not reliable alone for legal, medical or official documents.
