AI for learning and tutoring
Using AI as a patient tutor to explain topics, quiz you and give feedback.
What is it?
AI chat assistants can act like a personal tutor. They can explain a topic at your level, give examples, answer follow-up questions, create practice quizzes and give feedback on your answers or your writing.
They are most useful when you use them to think, not to skip thinking: ask for hints instead of full answers, explain things back in your own words, and test yourself. Because AI can be wrong, check important facts against textbooks, teachers or trusted sources, and follow your school's rules about AI use.
Which models use it?
- General assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are used for explanations and practice.
- Khan Academy offers Khanmigo, an AI tutor built on a large language model.
- Language-learning apps such as Duolingo use AI for practice and feedback.
- Some assistants offer study or learning modes that guide you step by step instead of giving answers.
How to use it
- Tell the AI your level, your goal and how much time you have.
- Ask for an explanation with a simple example, then ask follow-up questions.
- Ask it to quiz you and to wait for your answer before giving feedback.
- Request hints rather than full solutions for homework.
- Explain the topic back in your own words and ask what you got wrong.
- Check key facts with a textbook, teacher or another trusted source.
Benefits

Limits and risks
- Can explain things wrongly with full confidence.

- Children should use AI tools with age-appropriate settings and adult guidance.
