AI for design and creative work
Using AI to brainstorm ideas, make mockups, edit photos and speed up creative work.
What is it?
Designers and creators use AI at many steps: brainstorming ideas and names, generating mood boards and concept images, removing backgrounds, extending or retouching photos, drafting layouts, and producing variations for different sizes and formats.
These tools work best as helpers inside a creative process. People still decide the idea, the brand, the taste and the final quality. AI can produce many options quickly, but it can also make generic or flawed work, and it raises questions about originality, copyright and fair treatment of artists.
Which models use it?
- Adobe Firefly powers generative features in Photoshop and other Adobe apps.
- Canva includes AI tools for images, text and design.
- Figma has added AI features to help with design work.
- Image generators such as Midjourney, DALL·E and Stable Diffusion are used for concept art and mood boards.
How to use it
- Write a short brief: goal, audience, brand colours, style and format.
- Use AI to brainstorm several directions before choosing one.
- Generate drafts and mockups, then refine the best one by hand.
- Use editing features for repetitive tasks such as background removal or resizing.
- Check the final design for errors, readability and accessibility (contrast, text size).
- Check licences and avoid copying a living artist's distinctive style or trademarks.
Benefits
- Faster ideas, drafts and variations.
- Removes repetitive editing work.
- Helps non-designers make clean, simple visuals.
- Lets teams test more ideas before choosing.
Limits and risks
- Output can look generic or similar to other AI work.
- Small errors in text, hands or logos are common.
- Copyright and ownership rules for AI output differ by country and tool.
- Using AI to copy an artist's style or a brand can be unfair or illegal.
Prompt template
Copy it, replace the parts in [brackets] and paste it into any AI chat.
I am designing [item, e.g. a poster / logo concept / app screen] for [brand or project]. Audience: [who]. Message: [main message]. Brand: colours [colours], fonts or feel [modern / playful / premium]. Format: [size or platform]. Give me 3 different creative directions. For each: a one-line concept, a layout description, colour use, and an image prompt I can use to make a draft. Avoid copying existing brands or artists.
