AI safety and responsible use
Simple habits for using AI honestly, safely and with good judgement.
What is it?
Responsible use means getting the benefits of AI while avoiding harm to yourself and others. It covers checking facts, protecting privacy, being honest about when AI was used, respecting other people's rights, and keeping humans in charge of important decisions.
AI safety is also a wider field. Developers test models for harmful behaviour, add safeguards, and publish usage policies. Governments and organisations are creating rules and guidelines, such as the EU AI Act and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, to manage risks from more powerful systems.
Which models use it?
- Major providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta publish usage policies and safety documentation for their models.
- The EU AI Act sets risk-based rules for AI systems used in the European Union.
- The NIST AI Risk Management Framework gives organisations voluntary guidance for managing AI risks.
- Schools, employers and publishers increasingly have their own AI-use policies.
How to use it
- Use AI as an assistant, and stay responsible for the final result.
- Check facts, especially for health, legal, money, news and safety topics, and ask a qualified professional when it matters.
- Follow the AI rules of your school, workplace or publisher, and disclose AI use where expected.
- Protect personal and confidential information when writing prompts.
- Do not use AI to deceive, harass, impersonate or harm others.
- Report harmful or unsafe outputs using the tool's feedback options.
Benefits
- You get faster, better work while keeping trust and credibility.
- Good habits reduce the chance of mistakes, privacy leaks and unfair outcomes.
- Being open about AI use avoids misunderstandings with teachers, clients and colleagues.
Limits and risks
- Safeguards in AI tools can fail or be bypassed, so your judgement still matters.
- Rules and policies differ by country and organisation and change over time.
- Overly cautious tools may refuse harmless requests.
- Responsible use takes extra time for checking and review.

Before I use AI for this task, help me plan responsibly. Task: [describe the task]. Who it affects: [people involved]. Context: [school / work / personal]. List: 1) risks (accuracy, privacy, fairness, honesty), 2) what I should check myself, 3) what information I should not share with the AI, 4) whether I should disclose AI use, and 5) when to involve a human expert.
