Real-time voice translation

Speaking with someone in another language as AI translates live. Early versions exist; quality varies.

Forward-looking: this describes work in progress, not a finished product. Nothing here is a promised date or release.

What is it?

Real-time voice translation lets two people speak different languages while AI listens, translates and speaks or shows the translation almost immediately. It combines speech recognition, machine translation and speech generation.

Early versions are already available in some phones, earbuds, video-call apps and translation apps. The goal is natural conversation with little delay, keeping tone and even the speaker's voice. Quality is still uneven, especially for less widely spoken languages, accents, noise and slang, and how close it will get to a skilled human interpreter is uncertain.

Which models use it?

  • Google Translate offers a conversation mode for spoken translation.
  • Some phones and earbuds offer live translation for calls or face-to-face conversations.
  • Meta has published research models for speech-to-speech translation, such as SeamlessM4T.
  • Voice modes in chat assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini can translate spoken conversations.

How to use it

  1. Try a translation app's conversation mode for simple situations like travel or shopping.
  2. Speak clearly in short sentences and pause so the system can keep up.
  3. Avoid slang, idioms and jokes, which often translate badly.
  4. Confirm important details such as numbers, addresses and times in writing.
  5. For medical, legal or official situations, use a qualified human interpreter.

Benefits

  • Makes travel, work and everyday conversations across languages easier.
  • Helps people access services and information in their own language.
  • Can support language learners by showing translations as they speak.

Limits and risks

  • Translations can be wrong, especially for names, numbers, idioms and less common languages.
  • Background noise and strong accents reduce accuracy.
  • Small delays can make conversation feel unnatural.
  • Voice data may be processed in the cloud, which affects privacy.
