Prompt engineering

Writing clear instructions so an AI model gives you useful, accurate results.

What is it?

Prompt engineering means designing the text you send to an AI model so it understands exactly what you want. A good prompt usually says what the task is, gives the background the model needs, describes the audience, and explains the format and length of the answer.

The model cannot read your mind or see your screen, so missing details get filled with guesses. Small changes, such as adding an example of the output you want or asking for a list instead of paragraphs, often make a big difference.

Which models use it?

  • Prompts are how you use chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.
  • OpenAI, Anthropic and Google each publish prompting guides in their documentation.
  • Image generators such as Midjourney, DALL·E and Stable Diffusion also rely on text prompts.
  • Coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot respond to instructions written in comments or chat.

How to use it

  1. State the task in one clear sentence at the start.
  2. Add context: who you are, who the result is for, and why you need it.
  3. Give the facts or text the model should use.
  4. Describe the format: length, structure, tone, language.
  5. Show one short example of a good answer if you have one.
  6. Ask the model to say when it is unsure or needs more information.
  7. Review the answer and refine the prompt instead of starting over.

Benefits

  • Better answers on the first try, saving time.
  • More consistent results you can reuse as templates.
  • Fewer made-up details when you supply the facts.
  • Works with any chat assistant, no technical setup needed.

Limits and risks

  • Even a perfect prompt cannot guarantee correct facts.
  • A prompt that works well on one model may work differently on another.
  • Very long or contradictory instructions can confuse the model.
  • Prompts cannot safely replace professional advice in areas such as health, law or finance.
