3D generation

Creating 3D models and scenes from text prompts or photos.

What is it?

3D generation tools create three-dimensional objects or scenes from a text description, one image, or several photos. The result can be a 3D model you can rotate, export to game engines or 3D software, or print.

There are a few approaches. Some tools generate a mesh (the shape) and textures (the surface look) from a prompt. Others rebuild a real object or place from many photos, using techniques such as NeRF or Gaussian splatting. The field is younger than image generation, so results often need cleanup before professional use.

Which models use it?

  • Some 3D creation and game tools now include text-to-3D or image-to-3D features.
  • Services such as Meshy and Luma offer AI 3D generation or capture from photos.
  • Research methods like NeRF and Gaussian splatting rebuild 3D scenes from many photos.
  • Several open research models generate 3D shapes from text or images.

How to use it

  1. Decide the purpose: game asset, product preview, 3D print or concept.
  2. Describe one object clearly: shape, size, material, colours and style (realistic or stylised).
  3. If using photos, capture the object from many angles with steady, even light.
  4. Export in a format your software supports and inspect the model from every side.
  5. Clean up the mesh and textures in 3D software before using it in a final project.

Benefits

  • Fast prototypes and placeholder assets for games and AR.
  • Lets non-experts create simple 3D objects.
  • Captures real objects and places in 3D using only a camera.

Limits and risks

  • Models often have messy geometry, wrong backsides or blurry textures.
  • Precise dimensions for engineering or manufacturing are not reliable without checking.
  • Complex scenes and moving characters are still hard.
  • Licences for generated assets vary by tool.

Create a 3D model of [object] for [use, e.g. a mobile game / a product preview].
Style: [realistic / low-poly / cartoon].
Material and colours: [e.g. matte red plastic with silver metal parts].
Approximate size: [dimensions].
Keep the shape simple and clean, with a flat base so it stands upright. Output format: [e.g. GLB / OBJ].
